Darktable Unable to Sync Between Multiple Devices
Some Darktable users face difficulties when trying to sync their work between multiple devices.
While Darktable doesn't offer built-in cloud syncing, many users prefer syncing their image libraries and edits between different computers (e.g., desktop and laptop) via cloud services such as Google Drive or Dropbox.
The problem typically occurs when files become out of sync or when Darktable fails to recognize changes made on other devices.
The first step is to ensure that your files are correctly placed in a shared folder accessible by all devices.
For cloud syncing to work seamlessly, all devices should be configured to access the same file path or cloud directory.
When syncing, remember that Darktable works with a combination of image files and its proprietary database (darktable.db), which stores all your edits and metadata.
If these files are not in sync, you may encounter issues when switching between devices.
The simplest solution is to manually ensure that the database and image files are updated on both ends.
If you use a cloud syncing service, avoid modifying the same image from two different devices at the same time, as this can cause conflicts or corruption.
In addition, make sure that the cloud syncing service you’re using is capable of syncing both files and folders without modification or loss.
For example, Dropbox may not sync files correctly if they are open in Darktable when changes are made on another device.
To avoid this, always close Darktable on one device before starting on another.
Another issue could arise if Darktable is not recognizing the updated database on a different device.
To resolve this, you can manually copy the darktable.db file from one device to another to ensure that all edits and settings are up-to-date.
In some cases, clearing the cache and resetting the preferences may also help to resolve syncing issues.
Check the preferences menu and delete or reset settings if the problem persists.
Finally, check your network connection and ensure it is stable, as syncing large image libraries requires a strong internet connection to avoid data loss or corruption.
If syncing issues remain unresolved, consider using dedicated photo management software with built-in cloud syncing, or explore third-party solutions tailored to syncing Darktable libraries across devices.
